Petition Title: Halt the Construction on the Keystone XL and the Dakota Access Pipelines (DAPL)

The DAPL and the Keystone XL Pipeline pose environmental concerns. The DAPL is projected to run underneath the Missouri River and risks contaminating the water supplies of 17 million Americans. Accidents happen even when every precaution is taken. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has reported more than 3,300 incidents of leaks and ruptures at oil and gas pipelines since 2010. The Keystone XL pipeline requires developing the Alberta oil sands, which takes even more energy than traditional drilling. These projects will also increase the release of climate-warming carbon into the atmosphere. Senator Bernie Sanders stated that these developments would xput the short-term profits of the fossil fuel industry ahead of the future of our planet.x
